November 3, 2013
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montreal, Quebec, November 3rd, 2013 - The Muslim Council of Montreal (MCM) congratulates Mr. Denis Coderre, newly elected mayor of Montreal, as well as all candidates and winners of the municipal elections.

“We thank all candidates for their dedication to the city and their efforts to serve. The election campaign was a time to highlight the pressing issues facing our city and now it’s time for all elected officials to put those promised words into action and commit to concerted action,” stated Salam Elmenyawi, president of MCM. “There remain numerous serious issues that we call on the mayor and on all city councillors to address, including hate crimes and hate speech, discrimination, equal opportunity employment, police performance, harmonization across the city of zoning by-laws for religious buildings and establishing proper communication channels with the mayor’s office. MCM remains committed to meeting with and working with the mayor, city councillors and all other political party leaders to resolving these issues and working together to build a better city.”
