Freedom Caravan against Quebec Charter of Values in Quebec City a success

October 7, 2013

Montreal, Quebec, October 7th, 2013 - The Muslim Council of Montreal (MCM) thanks all Quebecers who joined in the successful Freedom Caravan this weekend, traveling to Quebec City to protest against the Quebec Charter of Values before the Quebec National Assembly.

“We were pleased to see over 1,500 Quebecers gather together, coming from almost every major town in the province of Quebec, to send a clear and united message to Premiere Marois that we reject her dangerous attempts to legitimize a racist discourse and institutionalized discrimination,” stated Salam Elmenyawi, president of MCM. “We call on the PQ government to act in the interests of all Quebecers and withdraw the proposed charter and apologize for all the damage it has caused already. Despite the facts that numerous local, provincial and federal organizations and prominent individuals have condemned the charter as being blatantly unconstitutional, the introduction of the charter has unleashed racist and bigoted sentiments, as we have seen a sharp increase in the number of incidents of violence and intolerance against visible minorities, especially against women. Instead of uniting the people of Quebec, the PQ government is fueling hate and intolerance, which will only cause long term damage to the social fabric of our province. Together we will continue to fight this proposed charter, reject this tyranny and protect the rights of all Quebecers and Canadians.”
