Muslim Council of Montreal extends congratulations to Egypt

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montreal, Quebec, June 30th, 2012- The Muslim Council of Montreal (MCM) extends its congratulations to Mohammed Morsi and the people of Egypt, as Morsi took the oath of office on Saturday, becoming Egypt’s first freely elected president.

“The journey will be long and difficult, but we are hopeful that this represents the dawn of a new era for Egypt, with the promise of a better future for all Egyptians,” stated Salam Elmenyawi, president of MCM. “The Egyptians have long suffered under the oppressive rule of Hosni Mubarak and have fought hard for a nation governed on the foundations of freedom, democracy, justice, peace and stability. It is time to extend our hands to Mr. Morsi, as he takes office and embarks on this daunting task, to send our good wishes and prayers for his success and also to assist him and help make this dream for a better Egypt possible.”

Morsi was sworn in at an inauguration ceremony before the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt, succeeding Hosni Mubarak, whose autocratic government was overthrown in a citizen’s revolt in early 2011. He is the fifth head of state of Egypt, since the abolishment of the monarchy 60 years ago.

“We hope that these events unfolding in Egypt bring hope to others suffering under the tyrannical rule in Syria and in other places all around the world, as they struggle to gain liberties and justice,” Elmenyawi said. “We pray that they too will soon see the fruits of their efforts and have a chance at a new life.”
