Muslim Council of Montreal Statement congratulates Libya, for freedom after steadfast sacrifices

August 24, 2011

Montreal, Quebec, August 24th, 2011- The Muslim Council of Montreal (MCM) extends its congratulations to the people of Libya, as the country moves closer to freedom following the storming of Col Muammar Gadhafi’s Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli by the Libyan Freedom Fighters.

“The Libyans have been bravely fighting for freedom for the past six months and we hope that gaining power over what was one of the final areas to remain under Gadhafi’s control will bring with it the swift establishment of a just state in Libya,” stated Salam Elmenyawi, president of MCM. “Gadhafi’s brutal and oppressive regime over the country and people of Libya is coming to an end and we hope to see him captured and brought to justice for all his atrocious crimes.”

“We regret the loss of all the innocent lives that have been lost in this war and we recognize the sacrifices of the thousands who gave their life for the freedom of their country. We pray for them and their families, and for all Libyans, hoping that these sacrifices will not have been in vain. We hope the international community will support the efforts of Libya in rebuilding their country and establishing a just and democratic state.”

“As we saw with Egypt and Tunisia, the citizens of Libya now have an opportunity to establish a country based on justice, peace, freedom, human rights and dignity. We applaud the courage of the Libyans in opposing the tyrannical and corrupt rule of Gadhafi and sending a clear message not only to their own government, but to governments and citizens all around the world.

“We hope this will help bring about the end of such brutal regimes around the world. Oppressive and tyrannical leaders must take note of what has happened and realize that the ordinary people of a state, after being abused and repressed for so many years, will ultimately unite to seek the justice and freedom that is the right of every citizen of the world. We hope that those fighting against state oppression in other nations will also be supported in their endeavours to gain freedom and self-determination.”

Libyans began demonstrating and fighting against Gadhafi’s 42-year repressive regime in the 17th of February. The number of the total death toll and wounded is still unverified, but it is suspected to be the thousands.
