Muslim Council of Montreal Statement about Death of Honourable Jack Layton

Montreal, Quebec, August 22nd, 2011- The Muslim Council of Montreal extends its sincere condolences to the family of the late Honourable Jack Layton, federal leader of the NDP and the Official Opposition, in the wake of his death.

“Mr. Layton devoted his life to serving Canada and helping to secure a better future for all Canadians,” stated Salem Elmenyawi, president of the MCM. “The strength, courage and conviction he displayed in successfully leading a federal election campaign while fighting cancer speaks of the enormous sacrifice he made for his country and of the depth of his commitment to the public interest.”

“The legacy Mr. Layton leaves behind for all Canadians is one of hope, optimism, courage, sacrifice and commitment to never stop working for a better tomorrow.  He will always be remembered as not just a great leader of the NDP party, but rather as a great Canadian and a great leader of our nation. We express our sympathy and condolences to his family, fellow party members and all Canadians, and hope that together we can achieve the dream Mr. Layton had for strong, just and prosperous Canada.”
