FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montreal, Quebec, April 21st, 2011- The Muslim Council of Montreal (MCM) urges all Canadian Muslims to actively engage themselves in the political process and prepare themselves to fully participate in the upcoming federal election on May 2nd, 2011.

“Voting is a right of all eligible Canadian citizens and it is imperative for all members of our community to take this right seriously,” stated Salam Elmenyawi, president of the MCM. “There are over a million Muslims in Canada. We have a voice and we can make a difference in this election. In order to use our vote wisely and make the best possible decision, every voter must acquaint themselves with the candidates running in their ridings and educate themselves about their platforms and policies.”

MCM urges all eligible voters in the Canadian Muslim community to take their civic responsibility of voting as an issue of utmost concern and not underestimate the importance of a single vote. For those unable to vote on Election Day, MCM encourages them to acquaint themselves with the available alternatives, such as advance voting and voting by mail.

“We must be ready to make an informed decision, a decision that will help our community and help our country,” Elmenyawi said. “By not voting, we are only giving up the right and privilege to make a difference and send a message to our politicians and leaders. Now is the time to get informed and involved and vote for the best candidates to help make a difference.”
