MONTREAL MOSQUES TO HOLD WEEKEND LONG OPEN DOORS EVENT

May 30, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 30th, 2008

WHAT:

17 different Montreal area mosques will be holding an Open Doors event this upcoming weekend, welcoming guests and visitors.

Visitors will be given a tour of the mosque, as well as be able to view presentations and displays on various topics. Volunteers will be on hand to answer visitor's questions. Free literature and refreshments will be available. The event will provide an opportunity to get to know members of the Muslim community and interact with them on a personal level.

"As the Bouchard-Taylor report on reasonable accommodation pointed out there is greater need for dialogue and understanding amongst Quebec's diverse communities," said Salam Elmenyawi president of the MCM. "Getting to know one another on a personal level is crucial for people of different backgrounds to build bridges together of unity and respect. We are committing to reaching out and working with our friends and neighbours to build a strong and cohesive Quebec society. "

There are an estimated 175,000 Muslims in Montreal, over 825,000 Muslims in Canada and 1.5 billions worldwide. According to demographers, Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world.
