Former Malaysian Taekowndo Player's statement in support of Hijab

June 18, 2007

Dear Editor,
I am a former Malaysian Taekwondo player and assistant instructor. I played in many tournaments including those held by the International Islamic University.

Women wearing hijabs while playing was never a problem. In fact, I almost became the national junior champion in 1997. However, I lost to a woman wearing a hijab during the finals. The hijab never stopped her from becoming the champion. As a Canadian, I am really dissappointed that banning the hijab in Taekwondo happened in Canada.
